Parking in Parking in Venice and how to get around

The first thing to know about parking in Venice is that it’s quite complicated!  As soon as you arrive in the city, forget everything you’ve learnt in life about traffic, jams, double parking, traffic lights, crossroads, and.... even roads! Venice is a lagoon, composed of numerous tiny islands interconnected by hundreds of bridges, where there’s water instead of roads, and the entire city is intersected by tiny streets (calle - plural calli) and canals. It is connected to the mainland by a four-kilometre bridge, called Ponte della Libertà (Bridge of Liberty), that connects Mestre to Piazzale Roma. Venice is a people-oriented city, where you can get around on foot or by steamboats.

Not being open to vehicles, parking in Venice as previously mentioned is not easy. There are very few available places to park a car before taking a steamboat or setting off on foot around the city’s narrow streets. One of these is in Piazzale Roma, possibly the best place to park in Venice. Piazzale Roma is only a few minutes from Santa Lucia Train Station, and is separated only by Ponte della Costituzione. It it is connected to the mainland by Ponte della Libertà (Bridge of Freedom), therefore it has become the interchange between land and water lines. There are large car parks such as l'Autorimessa Comunale - AVM and Garage San Marco for anyone who wants to stay in Venice for a few days. Another option for staying in Venice is to leave your vehicle at Mestre, in the SABA Venezia Mestre Station or Garage Europa Mestre car parks, and take the train from Mestre Station to Santa Lucia Train Station, or any of the buses going to Piazzale Roma.

 

Public Transport in Venice

Steamboats

Public transport is run by ACTV (Azienda comunale di trasporto pubblico - Municipal company for public transport), and has a fleet of 159 including steamboats, ferries, motorboats, and motor vessels. There are a total of 30 lines and 120 floating stations making any point of the lagoon reachable. The lines are divided according to their route:

• Central City Lines: Lines 1 and 2, which take the Canal Grande (Grand Canal) and Canale della Giudecca (Giudecca Canal), departing from Tronchetto and reach Venice Lido (an 11-kilometre long sandbar closing the lagoon).
• City Tour Lines: Lines 3, 4.1, 4.2, 5.1, 5.2, 6 that circumnavigate the external perimeter of the lagoon.
• Lagoon Lines: Lines 12, 13, 14 e 19 connecting the lagoon’s external islands such as Burano, Torcello, Murano, San Servolo, and San Erasmo with the mainland at Treporti, Chioggia, Fusina, Punta Sabbioni, and San Giuliano, as well as with the airport Marco Polo.
• Seasonal Lines: Are activated during periods of mass tourism, such as the summer months or during the Film Festival of Venice.

Besides these lines there’s also the Alilaguna service, whose five lines connect the airport, and cruise terminal to the city centre, to Venice Lido, Murano, and to Punta Sabbioni. Regarding connections to the mainland ACTV has four bus lines that depart from Piazzale Roma crossing Ponte della Libertà (Bridge of Liberty), and reaching Mestre, Marco Polo Airport, and Canova Airport of Treviso . • Boat Ticket 75 minutes: € 7.50 Valid on every route (excluding Alilaguna and Lines 16 & 19) for the 75 minutes following its punching.
• Return Boat Ticket for the Beach: € 13.00 Valid on Line 14 for a return trip for Venice / Lido SME, Punta Sabbioni / Lido SME, and the bus line of Venice Lido.
• Single Boat Ticket: € 5.00 Gives a single trip on any of these lines: Lido SME - S.Elena or Giardini / S.Marco S.Zaccaria-S.Servolo / S.Marco S.Zaccaria-S.Giorgio / Zattere-Palanca / Murano Colonna-Cimitero o Fondamente Nove / Chioggia Pellestrina.
• Return Boat Ticket: € 10.00 Gives a return trip on the above lines.
