The city of Venice is divided into sestieri (English: districts), equivalent to neighbourhoods, one of these is Dorsoduro. Dorsoduro gets its name from the composition of its soil, that was not as swampy as other parts of the lagoon in the past, and it’s located immediately after the San Marco District to which it is connected by Ponte dell'Accademia. It is Venice’s district with the highest concentration of museums, including Galleria dell'Accademia.

Amongst its most prominent churches there are Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute and the Church of Santa Maria del Rosario, better known as Chiesa dei Gesuati. In Dorsoduro there is also Ca' Rezzonico, housing the Museum of 18th-century Venice, Ca' Dario and the famous Ca' Foscari, today housing the renowned Università Ca' Foscari di Venezia. Being the main university district of the city, Dorsoduro is full of youths, especially around Campo Santa Margherita, where there are numerous bars and clubs open at every hour of the day and night.
