Parking in Santa María del Pi Basilica

The beautiful Santa María del Pi Basilica in Barcelona is located in the city’s Barri Gòtic quarter. This area is absolutely stunning, and walking through in narrow, winding streets, you are sure to be transported back to the past. 

But what this period in the past didn’t seem to anticipate was people who wanted to park! Parking is the area is pretty tough, on street parking spaces are not common and Barcelona’s strict traffic rules apply too! That’s to say, a maximum of 2 hours parking in the green zone and 4 hours parking in the blue zone - and it doesn’t come cheap either.

Basilica Santa María del Pi

This Catalan Gothic style Catholic church is, funnily enough, in the Gothic Quarter of the city. Its name in English would be Saint Mary of the Pine, which is another name given to the Virgin Mary. It gets its name from an image of the Virgin Mary that was found inside the trunk of a Pine tree. 

It was completed in 1453 and you can find it at the delightful Plaza del Pino. What characterises this basilica is the fact that it has a single enormous nave. As well as a beautiful circular window, which although the original was destroyed in 1939, this one is an authentic copy. It really does give the place an almost mystical ambience. 

Finally, and simply because you can’t miss it is the 54 metre octagonal bell tower, which is the home of 6 bells and the biggest one, affectionately called ‘Antònia’, weighs a portly 1.806 kilograms, that’s almost 4000 lbs! 

After having visited this striking basilica, then just hop onto the metro at the Liceu station (line 3) and explore the rest of the Catalan capital - you've got to see the Sagrada Familia before you leave!
